TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Daniil Medvedev (3) meets Aslan Karatsev in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev be able to get some positive results on clay under his belt even through it is a surface which he dislikes very much? Will Aslan Karatsev come out here ready to cause another big upset in his career as he continues to rise up the rankings? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16. Who will it be?
Aslan Karatsev cruised through his Round of 64 match against the Serbian, Miomir Kecmanovic, in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Aslan Karatsev was really good all throughout that match, continuing to show us that he likes playing in these clay court conditions as he has shown already this year by beating the likes of Novak Djokovic. Aslan will now have a very tough challenge on hand in his fellow Russian friend, Daniil Medvedev, in the Round of 32 of the 2021 Rome Open, however, he will also see that there will be many opportunities for him to cause the upset here as this is a match on clay which Medvedev hates.
Daniil Medvedev performed badly last week at the 2021 Madrid Open, losing in his second match to Cristian Garin after barely scraping through his first round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Daniil is a very good player, reached many late stages of Grand Slams and won many big tournaments, however, he just is not good on clay. He does not like the way the ball bounces, he does not like the speed of his shots which would have been winners on a hard court, and he isn’t a good mover. Daniil Medvedev will be awaiting the grass and hard court season eagerly, but he still needs to bring out his best against Aslan Karatsev here in Rome.
Daniil Medvedev and Aslan Karatsev have met 2 times before, with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 2-0. They met many many years ago, and times have changed since then. However, because this match is on a clay court, instead of a hard court, I believe that the upset is a very big opportunity here for Aslan Karatsev. Medvedev will need to raise his level on clay drastically if he wants to win here, but I don’t see him doing that. Aslan will have the confidence as he has already beaten the likes of Djokovic on clay this year, and he will win this match and make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Rome Open.
