TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Oscar Otte in the Round of 16 on Monday, September 6th, 2021.
Will Matteo Berrettini go through? Will Oscar Otte pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have the finalist of the last grand slam looking to make the quarterfinals yet again. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open?
Matteo Berrettini has been playing tennis that is not completely up to his standards as of late, dropping many sets and being pushed by players who he maybe should be beating more comfortably. However, despite that, he has shown great mental resolve to get through all of them even though he wasn’t at his best. He now has a great opportunity to make it through to the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open, taking on Oscar Otte. While this match won’t be easy, I definitely don’t foresee Berrettini being pushed to five. I think as long as he serves well and is able to use his big groundstrokes to clinch out the tough moments, then he will get through this match pretty easily and head through.
Oscar Otte has been playing some good tennis, causing many upsets and using his huge serve to get through matches. He now has by far the toughest match of the tournament for him ahead, taking on Matteo Berrettini. While Berrettini isn’t playing his best, he’s still very good and Otte doesn’t have much of a chance against him. I do think Otte will take a set off of him, probably one of the first two sets in a tiebreak, but that’s probably as far as he will get against him. In order to go further than that, he would have to either hope Berrettini’s serve is off, or return like he never has before, as Berrettini isn’t playing that good so if Otte can get some of those serves back, then I like his chances to get into a couple of service games. Let’s see if he can do that and challenge Berrettini for a spot in the 2021 US Open.
Matteo Berrettini and Oscar Otte have met once before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 1-0. Their only meeting was in Roland Garros during the 2018 edition. Berrettini won in four sets, dropping the first to take the next three in a dominant fashion. I suspect this encounter will be similar, with Otte coming out of the blocks firing only to fall to Berrettini as the match progresses, however, this time the sets will definitely be closer, and the result will never be as clear due to the speed of the courts and the way in which both players’ serves will be manipulated. It’ll be an interesting one, and I expect Berrettini to make a good showing to progress to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open.
