Fresh from a semifinal run at the Monte Carlo Masters, Grigor Dimitrov will make the trip to the Barcelona Open to take on Argentina’s clay-court specialist Federico Coria. There will be no rest for weary legs of the Bulgarian, so can he avoid the upset?
Grigor Dimitrov saved his best tennis for the Monte Carlo Masters. And for the second time in his career, he made the semifinals at a city he calls a second home. The Monte Carlo resident registered high quality wins over the likes of Dusan Lajovic and Hubert Hurkacz. He also upset Casper Ruud for his very first Top 10 win of the year. The Bulgarian No. 1 is onto double-digit wins for the season and will be keen to keep that run going at this week’s Barcelona Open where he returns for the first time since 2019.
Federico Coria, meanwhile, was in action due to his unseeded status in the main draw. Coria took on USA’s Marcos Giron in the first round and proved why he has usurped his opponent in the rankings in recent weeks. The Argentine, who came off a semifinal run in Marrakech, made a lightning start to the match by breaking Giron twice in the opening exchanges. He wrapped up the first set in just 28 minutes. Although Giron responded by drawing level in the second set, Coria was a touch above the American in the decider as he romped to take it 6-1.
World No. 23 Grigor Dimitrov has not played Federico Coria at any level. Wednesday’s match at the Barcelona Open will be their first official meeting on the ATP Tour. Should Dimitrov operate at the same level as he did in Monte Carlo, he will be tough to beat. His lovely combination of offensive shots and brick-wall defense made him an unwelcomed opponent for most of the field at the Principality. He looks more like his old self and I expect him to come through a very challenging Coria.
