Richard Gasquet shocked us all in his opening round match, beating the heavy favourite of the match, and his fellow Frenchman, Ugo Humbert, coming back from a set down. Ugo was playing well during the match, keeping things close. However, Richard just found an extra level in the match which we had not seen from him in a while, serving well, returning well, and maintaining his composure during the tight moments. With his flamboyant playing style and experience, Richard will want to keep this momentum going at the 2022 Australian Open, but he meets the tough Botic van de Zandschulp.
Botic van de Zandschulp dominated his opening round match, beating the big swinging Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets. The match was very entertaining, with Botic being able to really dominate off of his first serve, but then both players having to fight for points on their second. Botic has really made a name for himself over the last 6 months, going far at the 2021 US Open, and hoping to now go far here at the 2022 Australian Open. However, he meets an experienced opponent in Richard Gasquet.
Botic van de Zandschulp and Richard Gasquet have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Richard Gasquet comes into this match as the player with more experience, and the player who beat the higher ranked opponent in the opening round, when we look at the match, we can say that Ugo Humbert was not at his best. If Ugo was perhaps 10% better, he would have won that match. Botic is a big hitter who can really push opponents off of the court. Richard will have his chances in this match, but I think the recent form of Botic van de Zandschulp gives me more confidence in his ability to get into the third round of the 2022 Australian Open.
