Australian Open 2022: Andy Murray vs. Taro Daniel Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Andy Murray takes on Taro Daniel in the Round of 64 on Thursday, January 20th, 2021.

Will Andy Murray get the win? Will Taro Daniel pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the former 5-time finalist with a great chance to progress to the next round. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Australian Open?

Andy Murray got through an epic with top Georgian player Nikoloz Basilashvili, defeating him in 5 tight sets. He now has a much easier match ahead of him as he takes on Taro Daniel, a player with a ranking and experience much less than that of Basilashvili. I expect him to encounter a little bit of resistance, despite the fact that he beat a top player in the first round, he will have to recover from that match, and Murray still has inconsistent lapses. So while I definitely think he will win, I don’t think he will win super easily as he would have five years ago. Let’s see if he can take advantage of a favorable draw and progress to the Round of 32 here at the 2022 Australian Open.

Taro Daniel got through his first round pretty easily, and hasn’t really been tested as he didn’t have to take on too good of an opponent. He has a very difficult one ahead of him as he takes on tennis legend Andy Murray, who got through an epic in his first round. In order to take him down, he will have to try and wear him down, Murray will make unforced errors if he’s pushed too much, but it will be quite difficult as he still has traces of his old game, and he’s most certainly able to play at a top 20 level even still, so I expect Daniel to have a very tough time as he aims to take down 3 time grand slam champion Andy Murray to move on here at the 2022 Australian Open.

Andy Murray and Taro Daniel have met once before, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 1-0. They met once in 2016, with Murray winning quite easily as you would imagine considering he was the world no. 1 at the time. Murray will likely not be able to pull out the extremely high level he had then, but he will likely produce a similar result, with maybe a set dropped due to the inconsistencies he still has in his game and mentally. Murray also very well may get through in 3 sets, this match will be a good indicator to how his level is in general as we’ll see if he’s able to recover and continue playing some great tennis. Let’s see if he can further his stay at the 2022 Australian Open.
