Will Taylor Fritz get the win? Will Frances Tiafoe pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have an all-American matchup with two very talented young stars. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Taylor Fritz got off to a great start, taking out his opponent in straight sets, showing why he finished as the American No. 1 last season. He will be taking on fellow American next-gen star in Frances Tiafoe, who is generally more inconsistent than Fritz and needed a five set battle to get through to the second round. I expect Fritz to be in for a tough match, considering Tiafoe can produce an extremely high level, but ultimately, the consistency of Fritz and their respective levels so far will earn him a ticket to the Round of 32 here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Frances Tiafoe needed five sets against a not too high ranked opponent, so it doesn’t look great for him as he aims to take down Taylor Fritz. Fritz is in great form, but I do think Tiafoe will push him, I think he will very likely eventually lose to Fritz in 4 or 5 sets, considering Fritz’s shots hold up much better, as he is able to serve more consistently throughout a match and make less careless errors, being able to stay in the rallies with top players, as we saw at Indian Wells last year where he managed to defeat Alexander Zverev. Fritz will likely take down his good friend to move on to the third round here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe have met three times before, with Taylor Fritz leading the head to head 2-1. They haven’t played each other since they were teenagers, but even then Fritz managed to lead the head to head against him. I expect a similar pattern to occur down under this season, with Fritz being able to stay much more consistent than Tiafoe. Considering the fact that Tiafoe struggled in his first match while Fritz thrived, I expect him to take down Tiafoe in the end and progress to the next round at the 2022 Australian Open.
