Gael Monfils put on a great performance against the up and coming Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, beating him in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Monfils was solid in his service games, hitting a high percentage of first serves, but the most impressive part of his game I think was the fact that he did not give Lorenzo even the sight of a break point throughout the entire match. Gael has played some amazing tennis recently compared to his first half of the year, and he knows that these conditions suit him, so he will want to play his best now that he meets Diego Schwartzman here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Diego Schwartzman also beat an Italian in the opening round, beating the experienced Fabio Fognini in straight sets 6-2/7-5. Fabio was clearly nowhere near the level he needed to be coming into this match, with no motivation or determination to do much. Diego was allowed to dictate the play, and Fabio was just playing until he lost. Although it’s a good win in terms of having beaten an experienced player, Diego will have to know that his next match (or matches) will not be as easy as this here at the 2021 Vienna Open as he now meets Gael Monfils.
Diego Schwartzman and Gael Monfils have met 4 times before, with the head to head tied at 2-2. They last met in 2019 here at the Vienna Open where Diego won in 2 sets in the Semi-Finals. Back then, Diego was giving it his absolute best because he wanted to make his way to the ATP Finals so he was making sure he got as far as possible. Now, I think this match will be tighter as both players are in similar form at the moment. Although Diego is the higher ranked player, I think the big serve of Monfils in these conditions, as well as the fact that these conditions favour players who can hit winners, I see the Frenchman making his way to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
