An interesting matchup awaits in the Second Round of the 2022 Australian Open as Hubert Hurkacz will play the tricky veteran Adrian Mannarino with a spot in the Third Round up for grabs. Both men had tricky wins in the First Round and will be hoping to build on those performances here, who will get the win and move on here in Melbourne?
Hubert Hurkacz is ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the 10th seed here at the 2022 Australian Open. The Polish star had a breakout season in 2021, winning his first ever ATP-1000 title in Miami and reaching the Semi-Finals at a major for the first time at Wimbledon. His huge serve and powerful groundstrokes make him an extremely difficult opponent on this quicker surface and he will be hoping for a deep run here in Melbourne. He had a difficult time in the First Round in his win over Egor Gerasimov, and will have to be much better here in the second against Adrian Mannarino.
Adrian Mannarino is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #69 on the ATP Tour. The veteran Frenchman is a very tricky opponent and despite being the underdog will like his chances against the 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz. He fought back from two sets to one down in the First Round against James Duckworth, and while he will be very happy with the win he knows that his next opponent will be a much tougher task. Hurkacz is the big favorite, but if he is not quite at his best then Mannarino is more than capable of causing the upset.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Hubert Hurkacz leading the head to head series 1-0. They played last year in Rotterdam with the Pole winning in straight sets. Adrian Mannarino is a very difficult opponent, and is extremely solid from the baseline, but he lacks the firepower needed to defeat an opponent such as Hubert Hurkacz and I see him going down here. It won’t be easy, but expect Hurkacz to figure it out and eventually get the win here at the 2022 AUstralian Open.
