TennisSection previews 2022 Wimbledon as Novak Djokovic takes on Cameron Norrie in the Semi-Finals on Friday July 8th, 2022.
The clash that all British tennis fans were hoping for has finally materialized, as their top player Cameron Norrie has become the first local player since Andy Murray to reach the Semi-Finals here at Wimbledon. When the draw was released he was given a strong chance of reaching this stage and he has backed that up. He will face six time champion and top seeded Novak Djokovic in the biggest match of his life, can he cause one of the upsets of the century and reach the Final here at 2022 Wimbledon?
Novak Djokovic is the top seed here at 2022 Wimbledon and is the third ranked player in the world. The legendary player has had a very controversial year to say the least, with some inconsistent play and his vaccination status causing headlines by preventing him from playing some top-tier tournaments. He came to Wimbledon with a mission, and that is to bridge the gap between him and big rival Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam race, and seems well poised to do so. However, the Serbian will need to be a bit more clinical as he approaches the Final, as it may only be a matter of time before his luck runs out. He seemed down and out in the Quarter-Finals against Jannik Sinner, quickly going down two sets to love, but then became fully engaged and used his immense fighting ability to will himself to win. There is no better counter-puncher on the ATP Tour, and he will be looking to be the aggressor here against Cameron Norrie, in a match that he enters as the massive favorite.
Cameron Norrie is the ninth seed here at 2022 Wimbledon and is ranked 13th on the ATP Tour. The British number one has delighted the nation by reaching the Semi-Finals, but his play has not always been as solid as he would have liked. Twice he was pushed to the limit and was down two sets to one, against Jaume Munar and David Goffin, but it is a good sign that he was able to fight back to win those matches. One must wonder how much gas he has left in the tank, especially since he will be up against arguably the greatest fighter that the sport has ever seen in Novak Djokovic. Norrie’s lack of a big serve and major weapon will hurt him here against Djokovic, an elite returner who will not give away many free points. Norrie’s only hope will be to be much more aggressive than usual, and to force the Serb into errors which is easier said than done. It will be an uphill battle, but the crowd will try their best to will him to win.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 1-0. It is extremely likely that he will extend that streak here, as defeating him this late in a major is one of the most difficult things to do in professional sports. Djokovic is the better player than his opponent Cameron Norrie in every single category, and when you factor in that Djokovic has the best record in ATP history at this stage of Majors and Norrie is making his Grand Slam Semi-Final debut, this is a foregone conclusion. Djokovic should run away with this match, most likely in straight sets. He has looked erratic at times during Wimbledon 2022, but his killer instinct will kick in as he is within striking distance of the title and he will be fully locked in here.
