Australian Open 2022: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Mikael Ymer Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Mikael Ymer in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, January 18th, 2021.

Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Mikael Ymer pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the Greek World No. 4 taking on a tough first test. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has been struggling as of late, but I definitely expect him to regroup in some sense, and I for sure expect him to easily sweep Mikael Ymer. He swept him here last year, and the conditions here are good for his game as he is able to serve big and take the ball early, playing an offensive game on the quick courts of Australia. Ymer is also a pretty inconsistent player, so Tsitsipas really doesn’t have much to worry about as he aims to progress to the next round here at the 2022 Australian Open.

Mikael Ymer had a pretty inconsistent season, playing a couple of great weeks of tennis like in Winston-Salem, but ultimately he just flew out in the earlier stages of tournaments, not being able to play consistently. To take on Tsitsipas in the first round here, who he also had to take on here last year, is a big punch to the gut for him. I definitely don’t expect him to be able to make many inroads against him, despite Tsitsipas’ condition. Let’s see if Tsitsipas can get a good start to his campaign here at the 2022 Australian Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Mikael Ymer have met twice before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-0. As mentioned previously, the two played here at the 2021 edition of the Australian Open, with Tsitsipas winning very easily. While Tsitsipas has struggled for a while with his game and his elbow, I definitely don’t see him having any issues here considering the fact that we saw him play some pretty solid tennis against Diego Schwartzman at the ATP Cup despite losing, and the fact that Ymer is quite inconsistent. Let’s see if Tsitsipas can show his top-level down under as he aims to move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open.
