TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Denis Shapovalov (14) meets Laslo Djere in the First Round on Monday January 17th, 2022.
The dynamic young Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the 14th seed will begin his 2022 Australian Open campaign against Laslo Djere of Serbia. The lefty is among a group of young “dark horse” candidates for the title here in Sydney and he will want to continue his fine Grand Slam form here. This looks like a comfortable match on paper, can Djere cause the stunning upset?
Denis Shapovalov is the 14th seed here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #14 in the ATP world rankings. The lefty is supremely talented, and has finally began to fulfil his immense promise over the past two seasons, and recently broke into the top 10 for the first time. He had a strong 2021 season, most notably reaching the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon and reching the Final in Stockholm, the scene of his only ATP title. The Canadian had a strong start to the year, winning the ATP Cup and has built some serious momentum heading into this event. His opponent Laslo Djere is not known for his hard court prowess, but has a couple of ATP titles to his nae and is highly experienced. Can Shapovalov continue his great form and get the win?
Laslo Djere is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #52 in the world. While he is more of a clay court specialist, he has had some success on hard courts throughout his career, and started the year strongly by reaching the Quarter-Finals at the Adelaide 1 International. His steady baseline game is sure to frustrate his opponent Denis Shapovalov at times, and he will be looking to use all of his experience in order to try to cause the big upset here in Sydney.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Denis Shapovalov leading the head to head 1-0. The Canadian defeated Laslo Djere last year in Geneva, on his preferred surface in straight sets. Given that fact and the fact that they are now playing on the Canadian’s favorite surface, as well as his much superior ranking, I expect a comfortable win for Shapovalov here. Djere is a solid player but has nowhere near the required firepower to be able to get the victory here, especially over five sets. Shapovalov will win this match comfortably, likely in straight sets, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2022 Australian Open.
