TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide Open as Gael Monfils takes on Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round on Thursday, January 6th, 2022.
Will Gael Monfils’ much-anticipated return yield a win? Will World No. 90 Juan Manuel Cerundolo produce the performance of his short career? While this feels like a mismatch on paper, we cannot underestimate Cerundolo’s chances of mastering an upset at the 2022 Adelaide Open.
Gael Monfils is the top seed at the 2022 Adelaide Open. And the flashy Frenchman has been made to wait for three days before he picked up his racket. Monfils will be in action against the talented Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo in what will be his first outing since beating Adrian Mannarino in the second round of the Paris Masters last November. Monfils was forced to withdraw from his match against Novak Djokovic ahead of schedule due to injury in Bercy, and brought his season to an end. For the umpteenth time, he will launch his new campaign in Australia. Monfils recently changed his racket sponsor of over a decade from Wilson to Artengo. Will the new wand provide the same magic touch for the 35-year-old?
Juan Manuel Cerundolo set up a second-round clash at the 2022 Adelaide Open against Gael Monfils following a fantastic straight-sets win over Australia’s Alex Bolt. Bolt was a tournament wild card at the event and certainly a man with a distinctive resume on the surface as compared to Cerundolo. However, the form book went out of the window as the 20-year-old Argentine made a seamless transition to hard courts and needed just 80 minutes to round off his maiden hard-court win of his career.
Gael Monfils and Juan Manuel Cerundolo will meet for the first time at the 2022 Adelaide Open on Wednesday. There is an age gap of 15 years between these two players, and a further nine titles separating them. Cerundolo is a player that excites and is far from a finished article. While I expect the Argentine to give a good account of himself, the gulf in class between these two players should be reflected in the score line. The Frenchman has as good an opportunity to add to his 10 ATP titles this week and I can’t see Cerundolo posing too many questions.
