TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Garbine Muguruza (9) meets Andrea Petkovic in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
Garbine Muguruza has been having an incredibly poor 2021 season by her high standards and will be desperate to find some form and make a deep run here at the 2021 US Open. The two time major champion looked solid in her opening round win but will have to be much better if she is to make it to week two here in New York. Next up she will face the German veteran Andrea Petkovic who will provide a stern test. Who will win here and advance to the Third Round?
Garbine Muguruza is currently ranked #10 on the WTA Tour and is the ninth seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Spaniard is a former world number one and Grand Slam champion, but has been in a serious slump lately. Early Round losses at the Rogers Cup and the Cincinnati Open didn’t help her US Open preparations but she is experienced enough to overcome that if she is mentally prepared. Her solid all-court game is a joy to watch when it’s clicking, and she showed flashes of her quality in her First Round win over the tough Donna Vekic. You could tell that she was lacking a bit of confidence, but once that returns she can be a serious threat here. Despite her poor recent form she should be considered the favorite to win here over Andrea Petkovic and will be confident of victory.
Andrea Petkovic is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #68 in the world. The German is a former top 10 player with a ton of experience, but has seen her ranking slide lately. Like her opponent Garbine Muguruza she has been in inconsistent form lately, but has won two titles in the past month and her confidence should be high. However, a loss in the Qualifying Rounds will have but a dampener on her preparations, but she still was able to recover and defeat Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in the First Round. It was an ugly win filled with errors but she was able to hold her nerve in the key moments to get the tough win. She is the underdog here against Garbine Muguruza, but her top 10 pedigree and better recent form means that she should not be underestimated here at the 2021 US Open.
This is the fourth meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour with the German having an astonishing 3-0 lead over the former world number one. That record shows that despite all her accolades, this will be a difficult match for Garbine Muguruza. Despite her having never beaten Andrea Petkovic, she has matured greatly since the last time they played in 2016, and I don’t see her losing this one. It certainly won’t be easy and her recent struggles along with those three losses will be weighing on her mind, but she didn’t become a Grand Slam champion without being extremely strong mentally, and I am backing her to overcome that. Garbine Muguruza will win this match in two tight sets, possibly three, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open.
