Will Lauren Davis be able to pull off the upset? Will Madison Keys make a strong showing and show that she is a force to be revoked with this fortnight? Wednesday’s contest will prove to be an interesting one, where we will see if Keys can avoid the upset.
Madison Keys came through her Round of 128 match on Monday with a straight sets win over Katie Swan. Keys served well in her first match, and this will definitely be one of the keys for her over the course of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Lauren Davis played her return games exceptionally well, converting on 5/5 break points, so the way she handles her service games may very well decide the outcome of the match. Granted, her opposition today was not very strong, only playing on the ITF circuit prior to this event. She will need to stay sharp and try to carry over the momentum she created to avoid the upset.
Lauren Davis got a great win today over Jodie Anna Burrage 6-1 6-2. With the way Davis held up mentally today and jumped on any break point opportunities today, we know Keys will have to serve up an excellent display. While her opposition remains the favorite, Lauren can try to stay steady throughout, and any opportunities that come her way she will likely be able to grasp. If she manages to pull the upset, I would not be too surprised, she will also have to get her service numbers up from what they were today. While they were definitely not that bad, they could absolutely improve and they will most likely have to in order to hold off Madison Keys.
Madison Keys and Lauren Davis have had 5 career meetings, with Madison Keys leading their head to head 3-2. The two have not played since 2015, so it has definitely been a while. However, this does not change the fact that they should be quite familiar with each other and in general, know what to expect. I see the match being able to go either way if the level of Keys is lower on the day, especially if she doesn’t serve well. However, I have doubts that her level will drop, if anything I think it will only get higher, so I do expect for Madison Keys to be able to get a good win over her countrywoman and move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
