TennisSection previews the 2021 Davis Cup Finals as Vasek Pospisil takes on Mikael Ymer in the Round Robin stage on Thursday, November 25th, 2021.
Will Mikael Ymer show us the amazing tennis we know he can play at moments and beat an experienced player? Will Vasek Pospisil use his big serve and forehand to keep the youngster at bay and get a good win for Team Canada? An entertaining encounter will be on our hands here, but only one will get the win for their team at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. Who will it be?
Mikael Ymer is making a name for himself, slowly but surely, on the ATP Tour, winning 17 matches on the main tour this year, and playing some great matches in big stages, such as at Wimbledon where he lost in that incredibly tight match against Felix Auger-Aliassime. At 23-years-old, Mikael Ymer, knows he still has time to get higher up the rankings (currently 93rd) but he also knows that he has fallen behind his peers of his age group. Here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, Mikael can get some good competitive minutes under his belt just a month before the start of the 2022 season, and I am sure he will want to come out here and show Vasek Pospisil that he is not to be taken lightly.
Vasek Pospisil has got a lot of experience on the ATP Tour, both as a player but also behind the scenes. However, this year we have seen Vasek focus more on the administrative side of things in the world of tennis, and his record of wins and losses shows exactly that, with the Canadian having won only 8 matches all year, and losing 14. Vasek has a great serve and forehand, and I am sure he can cause some damage still on his day. However, with such lack of play, and such inconsistency, how will he come out here and play at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals? Will the Canadian have enough to take on the young and energetic Mikael Ymer?
Vasek Pospisil and Mikael Ymer have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. When we compare their games, if this was a random year of their career, I would choose Vasek Popsisil to win this match. However, with the lack of tennis he has played this year and his poor performances when he has played, I have to go with the youngster here. Mikael Ymer is not as good as his peers, but he is still a very good player who can hurt opponents on his day. I expect a tight match as both players will try and get a feel for the match conditions, but Team Sweden will get a good win under their belt here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals.
