TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Elina Svitolina takes on Leylah Fernandez in the Quarter-Finals on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021.
Will Elina Svitolina go through? Will Leylah Fernandez pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have a very in-form top ranked player in the world taking on the very talented youngster. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 US Open?
Elina Svitolina has been playing some great tennis, having defeated many good players, she is definitely playing like the number five seed. She has a great opportunity to reach the semifinals here at the 2021 US Open, coming up against Leylah Fernandez, a very young and inexperienced player, albeit, one who is playing very well. Still, Svitolina has way more experience and the ranking to show for it, I would pit her as the favorite for sure, however, she will not win easily, and I expect this match to go the distance. Fernandez is a lefty, so if Svitolina can hit some flatter balls cross court off of her forehand, then I like her chances to set up a lot of points that way and play aggressive as soon as she is able to get herself into that position and execute basic patterns from there, just making sure she hits a flat forehand with a good amount of pace cross court.
Leylah Fernandez got a great win to set up this meeting with Elina Svitolina, taking out Kerber in three sets after being Osaka in three sets. She’s grinding really well, absorbing the pace of her opponents and being able to counterpunch well, and turn the points around in her favor. However, that was off of her forehand, and I’ve noticed several discrepancies in her backhand, so I’m not incredibly confident that she’ll be able to easily reflect the pace she’ll get from Svitolina and turn the points in her favor. I think a lot of balls will fall short from Fernandez, allowing Svitolina to step in and play aggressively. Still, just because of the confidence level Fernandez is at and the fact that Svitolina won’t be able to perfectly execute her gameplan every time, the match will likely go three sets as we watch to see who will progress to the semifinals at the 2021 US Open.
Elina Svitolina and Leylah Fernandez have met once before, with Elina Svitolina leading the head to head 1-0. Surprisingly, they have actually met once before, with Svitolina taking out Fernandez 6-4 7-5 last year, when Fernandez was just 17 years old. Svitolina wasn’t playing that well at that point, and Fernandez has gotten way better, so it’s not like that match gives us a ton to go off of, however, Fernandez has played Svitolina in the small amount of matches that she’s had in her career, being just 18, so they will know how to play each other, even if the conditions are definitely different. Svitolina will also already know what she did to beat her, so that gives her even more of an edge then she has already to pull it out in three at the 2021 US Open.
