Lorenzo Musetti cruised through his first round match against the very experienced Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez. The Italian won in straight sets 6-4/6-3 by continuously putting balls back into the court, forcing Feliciano Lopez to go for bigger shots and make mistakes. Lorenzo Musetti is on a meteoric rise this year and I am sure he will rise very high in the rankings in 2021 if he continues to put on very solid performances in tournaments such as the 2021 Barcelona Open. However, Lorenzo Musetti will also need to focus on continuously improving, especially as he now meets a very tough opponent in Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Second Round.
Felix Auger-Aliassime will be looking to bounce back from a tough first round loss at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters last week, where he lost to Cristian Garin in straight sets 7-6/6-1. Felix Auger-Aliassime was dominating the first set, but he let the easiness get to his head and he stopped pushing as hard as he was. Cristian Garin took advantage of this and cruised through the remainder of the match. I am very sure that Toni Nadal had a long chat with Felix after this match, trying to give him the knowledge on how to handle those situations during a match. They will both be aiming to start their week off strongly here at the 2021 Barcelona Open as they meet an up and comer in Lorenzo Musetti.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti have never met before, with this being their first encounter on the ATP Tour. Although many might be looking at the last few weeks in form and might edge towards Lorenzo Musetti causing the upset, I think that Felix Auger-Aliassime’s partnership with Toni Nadal will help him a lot here. Toni will have worked some of his magic already in the last week, and I expect to see some new aspects to the Felix Auger-Aliassime game in this second round match at the 2021 Barcelona Open. It might be tight, but the Canadian will come through in the end.
