TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Alexander Zverev takes on Hubert Hurkacz in the group stages on Thursday, November 18th, 2021.
Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Hubert Hurkacz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a fascinating matchup with two opposing but similar styles. Who will finish the group stages on the best note at the 2021 ATP Finals?
Alexander Zverev suffered a tough loss to Daniil Medvedev todaying, losing 6-8 in the 3rd set tiebreaker. He has a great opportunity to confirm his spot in the semifinals though as he comes up against Hubert Hurkacz who really didn’t play very good in his match against Sinner. If Zverev is able to just keep his level steady and not make many errors, I definitely expect him to be able to get through as Hurkacz is just out of form at the moment. Zverev will have some pressure on him though, as there’s no guarantee Medvedev will try that hard against Sinner as he’s already qualified, so Zverev really will want to win as he aims to finish on a good note at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Hubert Hurkacz was down in the dumps today against Sinner, not being able to put a ball in the court. He had a decent start against Medvedev in the first ever match played in Turin, but he just couldn’t follow up the level against Sinner. His serve wasn’t too bad, and his return was alright as well, but he just made too many unforced errors, likely due to a lack of having an actual gameplan, he should have focused on making the rallies longer as Hurkacz typically doesn’t miss that often, especially earlier in the season. Let’s see if Hurkacz can miraculously turn his level around and potentially stop Zverev from making the semifinals at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Alexander Zverev and Hubert Hurkacz have met once before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came on the clay in 2019, with Hurkacz managing to win a set despite being rather unknown at that point. Hurkacz will want to try and stray away from being aggressive, Sinner was a tough matchup for him today as he was hitting so big, and Hurkacz isn’t the best power absorber, and while Zverev is of course also a big hitter, he likely won’t go all out like Sinner did. Still, he will likely play a disciplined game, focusing on making his shots and serving big to take down Hurkacz and confirm his place in the semifinals at the 2021 ATP Finals.
