TennisSection previews the 2021 Stockholm Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Denis Shapovalov in the semifinals on Friday, November 12th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime get the win? Will Denis Shapovalov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the number one and two Canadians coming to a clash. Who will move on to the final of the 2021 Stockholm Open?
Felix Auger-Aliassime got a solid win over Van De Zandschulp to set up this tough meeting with his good friend and the number three seed in Denis Shapovalov. At the start of the year, people likely didn’t see FAA getting into a position to be the favorite and ultimately better player over Shapovalov, but with the tennis he’s played and the results he’s shown, he is the clear favorite to take this one. It makes sense, Auger-Aliassime has a huge serve and Shapovalov isn’t the best returner. Meanwhile, he plays a one-hander game where he’s always trying to use his talent and finesse, sort of like Federer, just not nearly as good. FAA has been playing more consistent, and I expect him to roll Shapovalov to book his spot in the final at the 2021 Stockholm Open.
Denis Shapovalov fought back against Rinderknech to clinch out the win in three tough sets in order to set up a meeting with number two seed Felix Auger-Aliasime. In order to take him out, he will have to play tennis much better than what he showed today. Rinderknech is ranked 60 in the world, to take down FAA, especially when he doesn’t have a great record against him is a very tough ask. He will have to hope that FAA doesn’t serve too well, otherwise I expect him to get the win in a relatively straightforward manner to head through to the final of the 2021 Stockholm Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov have met 5 times before, with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 3-2. It’s a fascinating matchup, with FAA turning it around this year, winning all 5 sets they’ve played. Their prior meetings came from 2018-2019, so not nearly as relevant considering how much better FAA has gotten. Shapovalov just struggles against him, as he has the ability to buckle down and hit big into the corners which Shapovalov really struggles with. Let’s see if FAA can meet expectations to take down his rival and book a spot in the last two to fight for the 2021 Stockholm Open.
