Holger Rune will come out here knowing that he is in great form as he just won the Bergamo Challenger on Sunday, but he knows that he is going to need to be at his best, have a full tank of energy, and play like he has nothing to lose if he wants to make a good start against Carlos Alcaraz here at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals.
Carlos Alcaraz has played some amazing tennis in 2021, bursting onto the scene and exceeding many’s expectations of him so early on. Carlos has always been poised to be a great player, but in his first full year on the ATP Tour he has already won 27 matches, won a title, and beaten two top 10 players. Carlos is a star of the future, and his tennis shows that he is able to dominate opponents through that powerful forehand. Alcaraz will come out here knowing that the last 2 winners of this tournament have become top 10 players in the year following their win here at the Next Gen ATP Finals, and he will want to make sure he follows in their footsteps. However, a win against a tough opponent in Holger Rune is required if he wants to not have much pressure in the round robin stages.
Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune have never met before on the ATP or Challenger Tour. However, this does not mean that they do not know each others playing style. They are great friends and they have trained together a fair few times. When comparing their 2021 season, it is clear that Carlos Alcaraz is clear in terms of statistics, being No.32 in the world, having won a title already, and beating 2 top 10 players. However, Carlos is also a clay-courter at heart, so his game sometimes can lack in indoor hard courts. This might give a slight opportunity to Holger Rune to take a set, but other than that, I think the Spaniard has more confidence at this level in the game.
