TennisSection previews the 2021 Stockholm Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on Mikael Ymer in the Round of 32 on Monday, November 8th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe get the win? Will Mikael Ymer pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two talented next-gen stars coming to a clash. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Stockholm Open?
Frances Tiafoe has been playing some great tennis, just recently making the final of Vienna, losing to Zverev in two tight sets. He’s had some great tournaments in general this year, including the US Open where he made the fourth round. He’s a very talented player, with a great serve and return, and very poppy groundstrokes that he can rip from anywhere on the court. Mikael Ymer will not be an easy opponent, especially considering he’s historically struggled against him, however, Ymer has been playing nowhere near as well as Tiafoe has, so I definitely expect Tiafoe to get his campaign here at the 2021 Stockholm Open off and running.
Mikael Ymer hasn’t been playing as well as he would like to lately, struggling to win matches in most tournaments he enters. Frances Tiafoe will be a very tough opponent for him considering the success he’s had lately. The two have somewhat similar games, but Tiafoe has much better touch at the net and much faster shots, as well as having a much more consistent serve. That’s why it’s rather interesting that Tiafoe doesn’t have a great record against him, but Tiafoe can be inconsistent at times so that may contribute to the negative head to head. Still, Tiafoe has been pretty consistent lately, so I ultimately expect him to get a nice win in two straightforward sets as he aims to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Stockholm Open.
Frances Tiafoe and Mikael Ymer have met 3 times before, with Mikael Ymer leading the head to head 2-1. They had one meeting this year, coming in Winston-Salem, where Ymer took down Tiafoe after dropping the first set. Ymer has the potential to serve really well, and just hit winner after winner, but he doesn’t do it too often, while Tiafoe’s entire arsenal of weapons has been on display throughout the last few weeks. While he may struggle a little bit, Tiafoe will likely overpower Ymer in almost every way to take him down and book his spot in the last 16 at the 2021 Stockholm Open.
