TennisSection previews the 2021 Sardegna Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Laslo Djere in the Final on Sunday, April 11th 2021.
Will Laslo Djere be able to cause yet another big upset here in Sardegna as he has now beaten two heavy match favourites in a row and look to win his 3rd career title? Will Lorenzo Sonego give Italian fans some more to cheer about as he wins the title in his home country in what has been a superb tournament by the young Italian? Both players have played their best this week in Sardegna, and they will definitely be both deserving of the title, but only one will lift the trophy. Who will it be?
Laslo Djere absolutely destroyed the No.4 seed and in form Georgian, Nikoloz Basilashvili, in the Semi-finals, cruising through the match in straight sets 6-2/6-0. Djere just seemed to have the answer to everything throughout that match and he was just ready to fight for every point. Laslo Djere did not let Nikoloz Basilashvili gain any confidence or belief in himself at any point throughout the match, which was vital in his ability to win so easily. Djere has a lot of experience in these small clay-court ATP 250 tournaments, and he has won a couple before. Djere will be confident in his game and experience, but he will have to ensure he is playing as well as he did in the Semi-finals if he is to get anything done against Lorenzo Sonego and lift the 2021 Sardegna Open Title.
Lorenzo Sonego came through an incredibly tight and exciting encounter against Taylor Fritz in the Semi-finals, beating the No.2 seed in 3 sets 6-4/5-7/6-1. Sonego has been very motivated all week as he began the tournament as the highest ranked Italian in the draw and he wanted to prove a point as most people have been talking about his younger compatriots Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. Sonego is able to move around the court with great speed and he is able to hit some incredible winners, which you don’t see too often on clay. I expect Lorenzo Sonego to come out here very motivated, confident, and determined to give it his all here to win his second career title and win his first title on home soil, but he will have to get through Laslo Djere first.
Lorenzo Sonego and Laslo Djere have met twice before, with the head to head split at 1-1. The last time they met was at the 2020 Qatar Open where Laslo Djere won in 3 tight sets 6-1/3-6/6-2. Although Djere won that match, the only time they met on clay was won by Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 6-3/6-3. Both players have been playing some great tennis all week, and I am very sure they will both be giving it their all to win their first title of 2021. However, when it comes down to business, I see the Italian, Lorenzo Sonego, getting the job done here and showing everyone that he is a very underrated Italian on the ATP Tour.
