Paris Masters 2021: Novak Djokovic vs. Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Novak Djokovic takes on Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 5th, 2021.

Will World No. 1 Novak Djokovic maintain his quest for an unprecedented sixth title at the Paris Masters? Or will Taylor Fritz avenge his defeat to the Serb in Melbourne earlier this year? We preview what should be a gripping quarterfinal match in Bercy.

Novak Djokovic has survived the onslaught that engulfed seeded players this week at the 2021 Paris Masters. The World No. 1 needed three sets to outlast the perpetually tough Marton Fucsovics in the second round. And Djokovic rolled into the quarterfinals without even having to take to the court to face Gael Monfils. The flamboyant Frenchman, who hadn’t beaten Djokovic in 17 meetings, withdrew prior to the match due to a groin injury. Monfils admitted to feeling pain in his win against Adrian Mannarino and made the hard decision to pull out on Thursday morning. Djokovic will enter the quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz with just one match under his belt. Although he was able to get some much needed match practice in doubles alongside Filip Krajinovic, with the pair of them losing in the second round.

Taylor Fritz, for his part, continued his terrific run of form during the close season as he knocked out Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-3 7-6 at the Paris Masters. That result could have huge repercussions in the ATP Race with Norrie’s chances of qualification pretty much over. Nonetheless, Fritz’s good form is showing no signs of waning. Victory over Norrie was the American’s 11th from his last 13 matches, and looks poised to overtake Reilly Opelka as USA’s new No. 1 when the rankings are updated on Monday. Fritz, the World No. 26 will now look to serve some old-fashioned revenge when he takes on Novak Djokovic in Friday’s much-anticipated clash.

Novak Djokovic has a 100% winning record against Taylor Fritz, having beaten the American in each of the past four meetings. Two of those matches were contested in the first half of the season. Djokovic won a dramatic five-setter at the Australian Open, playing through pain after suffering a mid-match abdominal tear. Their match in Rome was devoid of any drama, but the 24-year-old San Diego native pushed Djokovic into a second-set tiebreak. It is a big ask, but I expect Fritz to make a real statement on Friday at the Paris Masters. His serve has not only been pinpoint accurate but almost impregnable. He has only been broken once in three matches, and that, against an opposition field featuring Lorenzo Sonego, Andrey Rublev and Norrie. Granted he will face stiffer competition against tennis’ greatest returner, he is due one massive win against Djokovic. The World No. 1’s wound is still fresh from that defeat to Daniil Medvedev at the US Open and felt perturbed in his first outing against Fucsovics. Fritz should be able to finish off the Serbian this time.
