Yet another exciting matchup is expected here at the 2021 Vienna Open as number five seed Hubert Hurkacz will face former world number one Andy Murray. After a long bout with injuries the Scotsman seems to have finally re-discovered some form and has been playing well lately. Will he be able to use all of his vast experience to overcome the challenge from the 2021 Miami Open champion Hurkacz?
Hubert Hurkacz is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Vienna Open and is ranked 10 on the ATP Tour. The Polish star has enjoyed a breakout season this year, winning his first Masters-1000 title in Miami and also reaching the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon. He has always had a huge serve and explosive groundstrokes, but can be erratic at times, and is also quite an inconsistent player. This year has seen a big improvement in those areas, and he will be hoping to end the year on a high as he seeks to seal a spot in the year-end event in Turin. His opponent Andy Murray needs no introduction, he is highly experienced and plays fantastic defense, two things that may cause the number five seed some issues. If he plays well then he should be considered the favorite to advance, but an upset is not outside the realm of possibility here.
Andy Murray is unseeded here at the 2021 Vienna Open and is currently ranked 172 in the ATP world rankings. The former world number one has had a miserable time over the past few years with injuries and it was feared that his career was over. However, he has shown remarkable determination and grit to overcome all those obstacles and has been quite impressive lately on the tour. He clearly is a much better player than his lowly ranking suggests, and once he can stay injury free it is only a matter of time before he will be back in the top 100 and potentially knocking on the door of the top 50. As solid has he has been lately, he will be up against it here with his opponent Hubert Hurkacz also being in great form and establishing himself as a top player in recent times. Murray will have to play excellent defense and draw numerous errors from his opponent in order to get the win here.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Hubert Hurkacz leading the head to head 2-0. They have played twice this year in Metz and Cincinnati, with both results going his way in two tight sets. I am expecting much of the same here, with Hurkacz simply having too much firepower for his opponent Andy Murray here. Murray is a fighter and definitely should not be counted out, but all of the odds are in his opponent’s favour, and I am expecting yet another straight sets win for the Polish star, who will advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
