TennisSection previews the 2021 Kremlin Cup as Aslan Karatsev takes on Egor Gerasimov in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 21st, 2021.
Will Aslan Karatsev move on? Will Egor Gerasimov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the top dogs in the draw taking on a tough first test. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup?
Aslan Kartasev has had a very interesting year, after being one of the best players for the first half of it, he’s simmered down. However, he’s still currently the 22nd ranked player in the world, and the very heavy favorite to get through this match against Egor Gerasimov. The conditions suit him perfectly, as he loves a quick hard court, with how early he loves to strike the ball. Karatsev has been struggling lately, not really serving too great, and often making unnecessary errors. If he can just cut down his error count a little bit, he can easily be one of the best in the world again, but it’s most definitely easier said than done. Still, he should get this match in the bag relatively easily and book a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
Egor Gerasimov got a good win over Kecmanovic, taking him out in 3 to set up this even tougher meeting with Aslan Karatsev. He is not a good matchup for Gerasimov, having already been handed 2 losses by him this year on quick hard courts. It will be no different here, with Karatsev still being the far superior player. Even if he is struggling as of late, there just really isn’t a whole lot to say about this matchup. Karatsev should get the win pretty quickly and we’ll see if he has the form to go all the way at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
Aslan Karatsev and Egor Gerasimov have met twice before, with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came in Australia and Dubai, with Karatsev winning easily both times. The first time was probably the most brutal result throughout the whole year, winning 6-0 6-1 6-0, while he was playing really well there, those kinds of results don’t just simply disappear. The second meeting was much closer, with Karatsev still winning in straights 6-4 6-4 in Dubai, where he won the title defeating the number one seed here in Andrey Rublev en route. I expect Kartasev to put on a similar show here, to take out Gerasimov in two sets and move on to the next round here at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
