TennisSection previews the 2021 Sardegna Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Yannick Hanfmann in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, April 9th 2021.
Wil Yannick Hanfmann continue to put on solid performances here in Sardegna as he looks to cause a third upset in a row and book himself a spot in the Semi-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open? Will Lorenzo Sonego continue to shine here in his home country and impress the fans watching at home? Both players are playing some great tennis at the moment and they will be very motivated to win here, but only one will. Who will it be?
Yannick Hanfmann put on a great display of tennis in the Second Round here in Sardegna, beating the Italian, and 2018 Roland Garros Semi-finalist, Marco Cecchinato in straight sets 7-5/6-1. Hanfmann is not very well known on the ATP Tour, but he is definitely a very strong player who can cause upsets when taken too lightly. His most infamous victory was last year in Hamburg when he beat Gael Monfils. This week, he has also beaten the in form Tommy Paul. Yannick will be filled with confidence and he will be very determined to continue playing this well, but he will have to ensure he is at his absolute best as he meets one of the best players in the tournament in Lorenzo Sonego.
Lorenzo Sonego cruised through his Second Round match here at the 2021 Sardegna Open, beating the very experienced Gilles Simon in straight sets 6-4/6-1. Sonego is very determined to keep up with the other Italians on the ATP Tour who are finding a lot of success, but are more known than him, such as Lorenzo Musetti, Jannik Sinner, and Matteo Berrettini. Sonego is not to be underrated and he has shown us this in the past with great victories over the likes of Novak Djokovic. Lorenzo Sonego will want to give it his best shot at winning the title here in Sardegna, but he will have to ensure he beats Yannick Hanfmann if he wants to keep this dream alive.
Lorenzo Sonego and Yannick Hanfmann have met 3 times before, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head 2-1. They last met in the first round of the Genova Open where Sonego won in straight sets 6-1/6-3. Sonego has always had the upper hand in their clay court encounters and I am sure he will be using those prior encounters to fuel himself to win again. It will definitely be a tight encounter as both players are in strong form this week, but at the end of the day, I expect Lorenzo Sonego to win and make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open.
