TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 15th, 2021.
Will Alexander Zverev move on? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the favorite for the title taking on a tough test. Who will move onto the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Alexander Zverev played a fantastic match, plowing past Gael Monfils to set up this meeting with Taylor Fritz. Zverev could struggle, as Fritz pulled off a huge win and has been playing some great tennis, but if Fritz doesn’t make enough first serves, with how good Zverev is playing here at Indian Wells I just expect him to easily sit on top of those second serve returns and break his serve. Fritz doesn’t yet have his weapons firing at a more consistent rate, while each groundstroke Zverev hits is a huge weapon beaming down the court. As long as Zverev plays the way that he did in his fourth round match, I fully expect him to get through this one with maybe a little bit of turbulence and book himself a place in the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Taylor Fritz played a great match to get past Jannik Sinner. He pulled off the upset in style, taking out a player on a hot streak in straights. Fritz plays a big game, and while he isn’t the worst person to take a shot at Alexander Zverev, there really isn’t anyone left in the tournament aside from Tsitsipas who can stand a chance against him in the form that he’s in. The key for him will be all in the serve, while his chances are very low either way, if Fritz can make sure Zverev doesn’t attack him on his own serve, that will put pressure on him and allow him to take control in a lot of different situations as they get deeper into the set, especially on the mental slide. Let’s see if Fritz can pull off the win of his life as he fights for a spot in the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz have met four times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 3-1. Their most recent meeting came at Wimbledon, with Zverev winning in four tough sets. Every court they’ve played on has been pretty fast, so this will be a change of pace, and it will for sure favor Zverev. We have seen Fritz push Zverev in the past and even beat him once. However, he wasn’t playing at the level that he’s currently at now here in Indian Wells, and the fact that this court is so slow definitely gives an advantage to Zverev, he will have a lot more time to wind up and redirect his shots. Fritz isn’t the best mover, so it will be easier for Zverev to overpower him that way and grab the win to go through to the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
