Indian Wells 2021: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Alex de Minaur Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Alex de Minaur in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021.

Will Stefanos Tsitsipas move on? Will Alex de Minaur pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two next-gen stars fighting for a spot in the last 8. Who will move onto the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?

Stefanos Tsitsipas played an alright match today against Fognini to set up this meeting with Alex de Minaur. Tsitsipas has a great shot to head through here, he’s a great matchup for de Minaur. With the way that he serves, and with the way that he’ll be able to return against de Minaur’s rather inconsistent serves, I expect him to be able to generate a lot of opportunities against de Minaur. He had a really poor start to his match against Fognini, but he managed to get it together, and most important he managed to serve well. While he isn’t quite playing at the level to challenge Medvedev or Zverev for the title at the moment, he has the capabilities to do so. Let’s see if he can put on a strong display here as he attempts to move through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.

Alex de Minaur got a great win today over Garin, 6-4 6-2. While he did manage to play a solid level of tennis to take him out, Stefanos Tsitsipas will be a different story. De Minaur has a pretty horrible record against him, and it’s not too difficult to see why. He hits a flatter ball and definitely can go astray with his groundstrokes at times, with the heavy ball that Tsitsipas hits, it’s hard for him to play the aggressive game that he wants to play. The serve is also a big factor, as de Minaur is not the strongest returner, making it hard for him to take on any player that has a big serve, and Tsitsipas certainly has that. Still, Tsitsipas can be inconsistent as he was today, so it will most certainly be interesting to see if he can stay at a constant level and get through de Minaur to move through to the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur have met 5 times, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 5-0. It’s just not a good match up for de Minaur, who has lost to him twice already this year. One coming at the ATP Cup on a relatively slow hard court, and on clay. Both of these matches for sure factor in here, as Indian Wells is playing really slow, and we know Tsitsipas loves his slow courts, in addition with the fact that de Minaur has been really inconsistent in general this year, with the lopsided head to head, and the court speed coming into play, it’s hard to see Tsitsipas not winning this match in a rather straightforward manner as the two fight for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
