TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Vasek Pospisil will face Egor Gerasimov in the First Round on Tuesday September 28th, 2021.
Both Vasek Pospisil and his First Round opponent Egor Gerasimov are unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open, and they have had similarly poor seasons so far in 2021. They will be eager to get their year back on track with a strong performance here as they seek to end the year on a positive note. Who has what it takes to get the win here and advance to the Round of 16?
Vasek Pospisil is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is currently ranked #68 on the ATP Tour. The Canadian was once ranked as high as #25 but injuries and loss of form has seen his ranking plummet in recent years. Still a very solid player, he remains one of the best doubles players in the world and has a dominant serve, which will be especially dangerous on this quick indoor surface. He enters this event in poor form, only winning two matches throughout his past four events and will be desperate to find some form here and build his confidence. While he is the favorite here, his opponent Egor Gerasimov is a talented player who can cause some damage on a good day. Pospisil’s experience is a big asset here and he will be relying on it to overcome his opponent.
Egor Gerasimov entered the 2021 Sofia Open by virtue of coming through the Qualifying Rounds. He is currently ranked #112 and is known as a very inconsistent player who has the potential to be a solid ATP Tour player. The Belarusian has been solid so far, winning both of his matches in straight sets to set up this First Round clash against Canadian veteran Vasek Pospisil. Like his opponent he enters this event in poor form, with a 2-5 win-loss record over his past five events. He is a solid baseline player with a very powerful forehand, and will be looking to that to help him overcome this challenge. Gerasimov is known to be erratic at times so he will have to keep his errors low if he is to have any chance here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a relatively comfortable win for Vasek Pospisil. His opponent Egor Gerasimov is a very talented player but he has been terribly inconsistent and is not likely to be able to be consistent enough to win here. When he is on he can be very dangerous, but that has been very rare recently and Pospisil’s serve and vast experience will likely be the difference here. The Canadian is also in poor form so it may not be straightforward, but he will win here and advance to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Sofia Open.
