TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Andrey Rublev (5) faces Frances Tiafoe in the Third Round on Friday September 3rd, 2021.
A blockbuster match is upon us here at the 2021 US Open as Russian star Andrey Rublev faces the hometown hero Frances Tiafoe of the USA for a spot in the Round of 16. Rublev has established himself as one of the best players in the world who is known for his huge ball striking while Tiafoe is one of the most dynamic players on the Tour, and always brings his “A-game” when playing at home. Can the American cause the big upset to please his home fans? Or will it be Rublev advancing as expected here in New York.
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked #7 on the ATP Tour and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Russian entered New York in good form and has carried that momentum on, defeating Ivo Karlovic and Pedro Martinez to reach this stage, losing only one set in the process. He is not quite at 100% yet but seems to be growing in confidence. When he is playing well there are very few people in the world that can handle his enormous groundstrokes, and he has an outside shot at lifting the title here. He is the favorite here against the American Frances Tiafoe but will be well aware of his opponent’s talent, and knows that he could be in trouble if he’s not at his best. The American can play with the best of them on a good day, and Rublev is certainly in for a big challenge here in the Second Round in New York.
Frances Tiafoe is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open, and is currently ranked #50 in the world. The young American is one of the most dynamic and explosive players on the ATP Tour, but has largely failed to convert that talent into consistent success. He has had a lot of big wins but also has lost plenty of matches that he shouldn’t, so he will be hoping to go on a deep run here at his favorite event. Tiafoe has started strongly here, with wins over Christopher Eubanks and Guido Pella, and while he is the underdog here against Andrey Rublev he is certainly capable of winning this match if he plays to his best. He hits the ball huge on both sides and can dominate with his serve, so once he can keep his error count low he can make this match interesting.
Somewhat surprisingly this will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a thrilling battle. Both men are huge hitters of the ball and are extremely talented shot makers. Andrey Rublev is the obvious favorite here due to his resume and consistency, but I wouldn’t completely count the American out. Athough inconsistent, he has proven time and time again that he never backs down from a challenge, and loves the emotions and pressure of the big stage. I am expecting a fantastic five set match which will be full of tremendous tennis, and I am taking Andrey Rublev here. Tiafoe will push him to the limit, but I trust the Russian more in the close moments and think he will have just enough to squeeze the win out here. Andrey Rublev to win and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 US Open.
