French Open 2021: Diego Schwartzman vs. Jan-Lennard Struff Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Diego Schwartzman (10) meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 16 on Monday, June 7th 2021.

Will Jan-Lennard Struff make it 2 upsets out of 4 matches here at Roland Garros as he looks to make his way to the Quarter-finals? Will Diego Schwartzman continue to raise his level here in Paris as he seeks to find his 2020 form which shocked everyone and put his name into the Top 10 rankings? This is going to be a match of server vs. returner, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open. Who will it be?

Jan-Lennard Struff beat the up and coming Spanish star, Carlos Alcaraz, in the Round of 32 in straight sets 6-4/7-6/6-2. Jan-Lennard is a very underrated player as although his main force is his serve, his +1 shot (his forehand) is also very strong. Jan-Lennard Struff is able to move opponents out wide with his big serve, and when the ball comes back, he more often than not has a wide gap in the court to hit in without being scared of the ball coming back to him. However, he now meets one of the best returner in the game in Diego Schwartzman, and this means his serve and his +1 shot has to be even closer to the lines if he is to win here.

Diego Schwartzman cruised through his Round of 32 match against the veteran, Philipp Kohlschreiber, beating the German in straight sets 6-4/6-2/6-1. Diego is finding his form again, and it is great to see him getting closer to his best. Diego Schwartzman, on clay, is one of the toughest players to beat because he is able to have more time on his return game and he is able to move opponents around the court by continuously hitting close to the baseline and the lines. Diego will now want to get himself into the Quarter-finals where he will most likely meet Rafael Nadal, to salvage at least some of the points he gained here last year when he reached the Semi-finals, but he will have to beat an in form Jan-Lennard Struff here at the 2021 French Open.

Diego Schwartzman and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They have met on indoor hard and on clay, and Jan-Lennard won the indoor hard match and Diego won the clay match. Both of them one their wins in straight sets. Both players have played very well here at Roland Garros, and they both deserve to make it to the Quarter-finals. However, when it comes to clay, I think Diego will come out on top here. Diego will be able to make the rallies so long that Jan-Lennard will get out of his comfort zone and he will begin to hit too big, causing errors. Diego is also one of the best returners of serve, meaning Jan-Lennard will not even be able to get many cheap points to keep the scoreline close. I think Diego wins it.
