TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Hubert Hurkacz (8) meets Aslan Karatsev (19) in the Round of 16 on Wednesday October 13th, 2021.
Big hitters Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karatsev will do battle here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open, with a spot in the Quarter-Finals up for grabs. This match is sure to be a thrilling one, so tennis fans will not want to miss it. Both men have played breathtaking tennis so far and will be highly confident and motivated to go even deeper into the draw. Will it be the Miami Open champion Hurkacz getting the win? Or can the Australian Open Semi-Finalist Karatsev advance?
Hubert Hurkacz is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked #12 on the ATP Tour. The big hitting Pole has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2021, winning his maiden Masters-1000 title in Miami and reaching the Wimbledon Semis. He has won three titles so far for the year and will have his eyes on the title here and is considered to have an outside shot. Boasting a 26-10 record on this surface for the year, he surprisingly demolished Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2 in an incredible display of power tennis, serving very well and hitting winners from all over the court. When he is in form and his error count is low he can be incredibly difficult to beat and he enters this match against Aslan Karatsev as the slight favorite to advance.
Aslan Karatsev is the 19th seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked #23 in the world. The Russian announced himself on the world stage this year with a run to the Australian Open Semi-Finals as a Qualifier, and also claimed his maiden ATP Tour title in Dubai. Other than those two performances he has largely been very inconsistent, and will be hoping to finish the season on a high note. Armed with a very potent offensive arsenal, he is ultra-aggressive from the baseline and tries to over-power his opponents. However, Hubert Hurkacz is one player that has just as much firepower as he does, and this match surely will be played at a blistering pace and be full of big ball striking. Karatsev is the underdog here due to his inconsistent form, but his win over Denis Shapovalov in the previous round makes us think that he is back to his best, and if that is the case then he is certainly capable of getting the win here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Aslan Karatsev getting the win just a week ago in San Diego. It was a thrilling three setter, and I am expecting more of the same here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. Both men are in form, confident and are huge ball-strikers, so whatever the result, this is a match that will be enjoyed by all. Despite losing to his opponent just last week which will be weighing on his mind, I am expecting Hurkacz to get his revenge and win in three sets here. He has been serving incredibly well this week, and I think that will be the difference here. It almost certainly will go the distance and both men are capable of winning, but ultimately I expect Hubert Hurkacz to keep his composure and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
