TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Gael Monfils in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021.
Will Alexander Zverev move on? Will Gael Monfils pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the top players in the world taking on a veteran who always has some magic in him. Who will move onto the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Alexander Zverev played a solid match against Murray to set up this meeting with Monfils. While he hit great off the ground, his serve wasn’t as consistent as usual, and he had some mental issues throughout the match, being broken when he shouldn’t have been and failing to serve out the match at 6-5. Still, his level is very high, and he should be feeling very confident going into this match. Monfils is playing quite well, but Zverev just hits much bigger in every aspect, on serve and on return. Monfils also didn’t serve too great, so if Zverev can hit those devastating returns deep down the court, I expect him to get this win quite easily as he attempts to book his place in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Gael Monfils played a solid match against Anderson, he did win 7-5 6-2, however, there were still a lot of question marks. He hit a lot of double faults, and if that serving continues, Zverev will likely roll through him considering how big he returns and how hard it will be for Monfils to get any opportunities on his return. I expect some rallies, but Zverev will be the one who can hit bigger and take advantage of all the short replies he will inevitably get. Monfils has a good game, and while he can push Zverev a little bit, at the moment Zverev’s level is just too high for Monfils to do any real damage as he fights for a spot in the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Alexander Zverev and Gael Monfils have met 3 times before, with Gael Monfils leading the head to head 3-0. Their 3 meetings all came years ago, when Zverev was nothing compared to what he is today, and Monfils was still a consistent top player in the world. Of course, those meetings hardly mean anything. Nowadays, we know the level that Zverev is playing at, and with how huge he’s hitting from the back of the court, Monfils will really just struggle to generate any opportunities to push him too much, considering how huge he serves and that he will definitely take advantage of Monfils’ serving, especially if it was like today. Let’s see if Zverev can put on a strong showing as he goes for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
