TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Jannik Sinner (1) will face Gael Monfils (2) in the Final on Sunday October 3rd, 2021.
The top two seeds Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils will do battle for the title here at the 2021 Sofia Open. Both men have been exceptional throughout the week and fully deserve to be here in the Final, but only one will be able to lift the trophy. Will it be the young phenom Sinner, who has taken the ATP Tour by storm over the past couple seasons? Or the veteran Frenchman Monfils, who has finally rediscovered his form and is ready to challenge for honors again? Who will be the 2021 Sofia Open Champion?
Jannik Sinner is currently ranked #14 on the ATP Tour and is the top seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open. The Italian superstar has really broken out on the Tour over the past few seasons and has firmly established himself among the top players in the world. At only 20 years of age he already has three titles (including the 2020 Sofia Open) and will be hoping to win a fourth. After having a successful start to the year he has continued that momentum here into the Sofia Open, and has reached the Final here without dropping a set. Dominant wins over Egor Gerasimov and James Duckworth were followed by a controlled victory over the dangerous Filip Krajinovic in the Semi-Finals, returning serve extremely well and dominating the rallies from the baseline. His serve was working well also, and if that is clicking again here against Gael Monfils he will stand a very good chance of winning the title here.
Gael Monfils is the second seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #20 in the world. The popular Frenchman has had an amazing career, and many feared it was soon over after his miserable performances over the past two seasons. However, he has rolled back the years and rediscovered his form over the last two weeks, reaching the Semis in Metz and going one better here in Sofia. Like his opponent Jannik Sinner, Monfils has not dropped a set this week, and simply crushed both Gianluca Mager and Marcos Giron in two dominant displays. In this type of form it is hard to consider him the underdog especially given his vast experience and past success on this surface, and he will be extremely hard to defeat here.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 2-1. This is set to be a huge battle between two of the biggest hitters on the circuit and it is sure to be a treat for all the fans. I am expecting this to go the distance, with Jannik Sinner emerging as the winner. The Italian currently has the edge in form and fitness, and is more reliable than Gael Monfils who has had a very inconsistent season. The Frenchman’s experience cannot be discounted and he certainly has a chance of winning here, but the smart money is on the young Italian to defend his title here in Sofia, and winning his fourth ATP title overall. It is only a matter of time before he breaks into the top 10 and he has a very exciting future ahead. Jannik Sinner will win here, becoming the 2021 Sofia Open Champion.
