TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Reilly Opelka (5) meets Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, June 23rd 2021.
Will Marton Fucsovics continue to make it far into ATP 250 and 500 tournaments in 2021 as he puts on some solid performances? Will Reilly Opelka get his first win on grass under his belt this year as he aims to impress like he did in 2019? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the Viking International. Who will it be?
Marton Fucsovics put on a solid performance in the Round of 32, beating the always tough Aljaz Bedene in 3 sets, 7-6/3-6/7-6. Marton has shined this year on the ATP Tour, going 17-11 in all matches and showing us that he can be consistent in ATP 250 and 500 tournaments. Marton would have gone further into those tournaments he played this year if it was not for an opponent he met 4 times this year, Andrey Rublev. Here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open, with this somewhat lacklustre draw compared to the Mallorca Championships also going on at the moment, Marton Fucsovics can reach the later rounds if he is at his best. However, he needs to beat the huge server which is Reilly Opelka in the Round of 16.
Reilly Opelka is looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week in his opening match in Queen’s where he lost to John Millman. Although he lost in the singles, he was very successful in the doubles as he reached the Final alongside John Peers having beaten the No.1 seeds along the way. Reilly Opelka can neutralise some of the best players in the game with his huge serve, and on grass he has proven that in 2019 at Wimbledon when he beat Stan Wawrinka in a great 5-setter. Reilly, however, will now meet a very in form opponent in Marton Fucsovics who has been very consistent this year in making it far into these smaller tournaments.
Reilly Opelka and Marton Fucsovics have met 1 time before, with Marton Fucsovics leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year in indoor hard court conditions in Rotterdam where Fucsovics won in 3 sets 7-6/6-7/7-6. Here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open, Reilly Opelka’s serve is not as powerful as it was in their prior encounter. Therefore, Marton Fucsovics will have a much better chance to win this match. Marton is great both on serve and return, and he has proven this in 2021 as he has won 17 matches compared to Opelka’s 8 wins. It will obviously be tight as Opelka can still get to tiebreaks with ease, but Marton will make his way to the Quarter-finals here at the Viking International.
