TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Gael Monfils (2) will face Marcos Giron in the Semi-Finals on Saturday October 2nd, 2021.
The in-form American Marcos Giron will do battle with the second seeded Gael Monfils of France for a spot in the Final of the 2021 Sofia Open. The unseeded Giron has simply been outstanding over the past two weeks since switching to this indoor hard surface, and has caused quite a few upsets lately. Monfils will provide his toughest test yet, but Giron will not be backing down form this challenge. Does he have what it takes to upset the world number 20? Or will the Frenchman win as expected, advancing to his first Final of the year?
Gael Monfils is the second seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #20 on the ATP Tour. The Frenchman was a staple in the top 10 for many years but has had a horrific time over the past two seasons, at one point struggling to even win a match. There was not much hope for him after a poor start to the season but he has managed to turn it around, and is seemingly on the way back to his best. This will be his second consecutive ATP Semi-Final after replicating this feat last week at the Moselle Open, where he narrowly lost to Pablo Carreno Busta. After receiving a bye and a walkover he finally took the court today, and cruised past Gianluca Mager in a dominant display of baseline tennis. He was aggressive and returned serve especially well, and was his usual explosive self. In this sort of form he looks incredibly tough to beat, but will now face a difficult opponent in Marcos Giron who is in career- best form at the moment.
Marcos Giron is ranked #66 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open. The American reached the Quarter-Finals last week in Metz and has gone one further here, and has an opportunity to reach his first ever ATP Final. After upsetting third seed Alex de Minaur he took out yet another Aussie in John Millman in the Quarter-Finals in an impressive match. He served particularly well and didn’t allow his opponent to get into a rhythm, slicing and rushing the net very effectively. Despite being the underdog here against Gael Monfils, he has shown that he doesn’t back down from any challenge and will back himself to cause the upset. His fighting spirit cannot be ignored, nor the serious momentum that he has built up over the past weeks. He doesn’t quite have the firepower to trouble the Frenchman if he is at his best, but with the year that he has had, it is far from certain that Monfils will continue his good form.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and despite the big gap in the rankings I am expecting a close and intense match. Gael Monfils is the clear favorite on paper, but he has been extremely inconsistent over the past few years and can be quite hard to trust. Marcos Giron on the other hand lacks and major weapons but has been in the form of his life over the past few weeks and is brimming with confidence. After considering everything, it is hard to look past the Frenchman. He has a proven track record and titles on this surface, and after a long struggle seems to be at his best. It won’t be easy given Giron’s form, but I expect Monfils to pull through this one, and get a confidence boosting win here as he attempts to win his first title of the year. It will very likely be two very tough sets, but Gael Monfils will win here, advancing to the Final of the 2021 Sofia Open.
