Sofia Open 2021: Alex de Minaur vs Marcos Giron Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Alex de Minaur (3) meets Marcos Giron in the Round of 16 on Thursday September 30th, 2021.

Third seeded Aussie Alex de Minaur will be out for revenge here at the 2021 Sofia Open, as he lost to his current opponent Marcos Giron just a few days ago at the Moselle Open. The unseeded American stunned his higher ranked opponent in two tight sets en route to a Quarter-Final finish here. He will be looking to repeat that feat again here in Sofia in the Round of 16. Does he have what it takes to cause the upset for the second consecutive week? Or will de Minaur have the last laugh and advance to the Quarters at the 2021 Sofia Open?

Alex de Minaur is currently ranked #26 on the ATP Tour and is the third seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open. The usually-reliable Australian has been in terrible form of late and has struggled to string wins together since lifting the trophy in Eastbourne just before Wimbledon. In fact, he has only won one match throughout his past seven tournaments and he will be desperate to end that streak here in Sofia. He will face Marcos Giron, his conqueror last week at the Moselle Open and will do his best to avoid another loss. Despite his recent poor play he should still be considered the favorite here although his confidence will be quite low. His work rate and mental strength are huge assets, and while he lacks the major weapons to dominate opponents on this surface his defense is solid enough to get by on despite his recent struggles.

Marcos Giron is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #67 in the world. The American has been having a solid season so far but will be hoping for some more consistent results on the ATP Tour. He will take confidence from the fact that he is in better form at the moment than his more renowned opponent, and more importantly, the fact that he won their meeting last week in Metz. It was quite a scrappy match but Giron held his nerve in the big moments and was able to come away with a tough 7-5, 7-6 win. He started strongly here so far in Sofia, defeating the dangerous Jaume Munar in three tough sets, needing a massive nine match points to get the job done. Giron is a very consistent player that moves extremely well despite his game not being too well suited to this quick surface. While his opponent Alex de Minaur is still favored here, he will have the belief that he can cause the upset yet again.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Marcos Giron leading the head to head 2-1. The American won their last encounter just last week in Metz, and will have taken a lot of confidence from that. Despite that and his strong play, I am going to back Alex de Minaur here but it is very close. The Aussie just has not been himself lately but simply is too talented to not turn it around eventually. Giron is a tough competitor but he is not in de Minaur’s class when he is in form, and I am backing him to grind out a very tough win here, breaking his losing streak. It certainly won’t be easy, but the highly experienced Aussie has all the tools and the capability to get the win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Sofia Open.
