TennisSection previews the 2021 Gstaad Open as Cristian Garin (4) meets Marc Polmans in the Round of 16 on Wednesday July 21st, 2021.
Fourth seeded Chilean Cristian Garin will begin his 2021 Gstaad Open campaign against Marc Polmans of Australia. They have met twice before including at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, and the matches have both been tight four setters. Now that he is back on his favored clay courts Garin is the big favorite here, but he enters this event in mixed form after a disappointing Swedish Open last week. Can Polmans take advantage and cause the massive upset here in Gstaad?
Cristian Garin is currently ranked #17 on the ATP Tour and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Gstaad Open. The Chilean has earned a reputation as one of the best clay court players in world tennis, and has dominated the lower level ATP clay court events. After a strong start to the year he has struggled in recent times, with disappointing Roland Garros and Wimbledon campaigns. He will be delighted to be returning to the clay, but suffered a shock Quarter-Final loss at the Swedish Open to eventual Finalist Federico Coria. Garin will be out to make amends here in Gstaad, and enters this tournament as one of the favorites for the title. He is the big favorite here against Marc Polmans but will be wary of his opponent as they have had some tight battles recently.
Marc Polmans unseeded here at the 2021 Gstaad Open and is ranked #147 on the ATP Tour. The Aussie has been having some very consistent results on the Challenger Tour this season, but has failed to replicate that at this level. He started well here in Gstaad, defeating local favorite Sandro Erhat in straight sets and will be full of confidence here against Cristian Garin despite being the big underdog. While he is much lower ranked, he won’t be discouraged as their two previous matches were very competitive, and he will be hoping to cause the upset here.
This will be the third time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, with Garin leading the head to head 2-0. While he is a lot higher in the rankings it seems that the Chilean dislikes playing against Marc Polmans, as evidenced by the close score lines each time that they played. All things considered, I am going with Cristian Garin to get the win here, as he is a much better player on this surface than his opponent, and despite his low confidence should be able to get the job done. The Aussie will keep it competitive as always, but expect Garin to win and advance to the Quarter-Final here at the 2021 Gstaad Open.
