TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Alexei Popyrin in the Third Round on Sunday March 28th, 2021.
Another fantastic Third Round match is expected here at the 2021 Miami Open, as top seeded Daniil Medvedev faces young Aussie Alexei Popyrin. These two players have both have had outstanding 2021 seasons thus far, and will be hoping for it to continue here. The Russian Medvedev has firmly established himself in the upper echelon of tennis stars, sitting at a career-high #2 in the rankings. Popyrin has finally started to live up to the immense promise he showed as a teenager when he burst onto the scene. Is he capable of the stunning upset? Or will Daniil Medvedev advance to the Round of 16 as expected?
Daniil Medvedev has been having a fantastic season so far in 2021 and has displaced the legend Rafael Nadal as #2 in the ATP world rankings. He is the top seed here at the 2021 Miami Open due to the withdrawal of world number one Novak Djokovic and is considered the favorite for the title here. His record for the year stands at an impressive 15-2 and he is in sublime form after capturing the title in Marseille two weeks ago. Medvedev has continued where he left off by thrashing Yen-Hsun Lu 6-2, 6-2 in the Second Round in an effortless victory. When he is fully focused he is one of the premier defensive players in the world, and his unique style never allows his opponents to get in a rhythm. He is the huge favorite to advance here over young Aussie Alexei Popyrin.
Alexei Popyrin is currently ranked #86 in the world, and is having a breakthrough year on the ATP Tour here in 2021. He has long been considered a top young talent but has rarely showed signs of fulfilling that until this year. The Australian claimed his first ATP title in stunning fashion in Singapore a few weeks ago, upsetting Marin Cilic and Alexander Bublik along the way. If this form continues, he is almost assured of reaching the top 50 by the end of the year. Possessing a huge serve and forehand, he has advanced to the Third Round here without too much trouble, with impressive wins over Feliciano Lopez and Reilly Opelka. While he enters this match as the huge underdog he will be very confident due to the year that he has had, and will be sure to put up a fight.
The two players have faced each other twice before on the ATP Tour, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-0. While Alexei Popyrin has been having an outstanding year so far in 2021, I expect the Russian to comfortably extend his lead to 3-0. Medvedev is quite simply a level above the Australian, and seems fully focused here at the 2021 Miami Open. He seems to be coping with the pressure of being the title favorite very well, and is locked in here. Popyrin won’t give it away, but Daniil Medvedev will win here in straight sets, advancing to the Round of 16 here in Miami.
