TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Rafael Nadal (6) meets Marcos Giron in the First Round on Monday January 17th.
20 time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal enters the 2022 Australian Open with a lower seeding than he is accustomed to, but he is one of the main contenders for the title here in Sydney. First up in the Spaniard’s path is the unseeded American Marcos Giron, and he is not expected to put up much resistance. Will Nadal cruise through to the Second Round as expected?
Rafael Nadal is the sixth seed here at the 2022 Australian Open and is also ranked 6th on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard is a legend of the game and a victory here in Sydney will see him claim the record that he currently shares with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. With Djokovic’s status currently unclear but not looking good, the draw may open up a bit for Rafa and it is hard to bet against him when he gets deep into the majors. He won the warm-up event in Melbourne without dropping a set and looks to be back at his best after an indifferent 2021. His opponent Marcos Giron is not expected to pose much of a threat here in the First Round, and Nadal is expected to have an easy time here.
Marcos Giron is ranked #66 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open. The American had a career best year in 2021 which allowed him to reach his highest ranking, breaking into the top 60. However, he has started poorly in 2022, losing in the First Round in both of his warm up events, so he would have been hoping to turn his fortunes around here in Sydney. However, he has been drawn against one of the best players in history in Rafael Nadal, and things are not expected to go his way here, and he is the huge underdog.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and the head to head record stands at 0-0. This is as easy a prediction as they come, and Rafael Nadal will win in straight sets. Simply put, he is a far superior player than his opponent Marcos Giron, and is better in every single category. Giron is a fighter and will give it his all, but he will go down comfortably here, with Nadal advancing to the Second Round of the 2022 Australian Open.
