Queens Open 2022: Matteo Berrettini vs. Filip Krajinovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Queens Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Filip Krajinovic in the final on Sunday, June 19th, 2022.

The stakes will be high in the final of the Queens Open as Matteo Berrettini looks to lay his hands on his second title of the season. But will first-time grass-court finalist Filip Krajinovicpull off the upset? Let us take a look at this match in detail.

Matteo Berrettini has not played a lot of tennis this year, but when he has, he has looked in brilliant form. Berrettini rolled into his second final in as many weeks after toppling Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4 6-3. Having captured the Stuttgart crown last week by beating Andy Murray in the final, Berrettini has been in a similar rich vein of form at London’s Queens Open this week. The Italian second seed hardly looked in a spot of bother as he outmuscled and outwitted the Dutchman from the baseline using his dexterous slices and powerful forehand. Berrettini earnedthree breaks of serve, one those coming crucially after a rain interruption in the middle of the second set. He will get the chance to defend his crown against a man who will play his first grass-court final.

Filip Krajinovic was not many people’s pick to win it all. Heck, he would not even have made the list of reaching the last four let alone make the final. Krajinovic was widely regarded as one of the weakest players on grass among the world’s Top 50. His record on the surface in the last five years prior to this week was just one win and five defeats. But he has defied the odds at the Queens Open, scoring a pair of giant killing wins including knocking off two-time champion Marin Cilic in straight sets in the semifinals. Can he win his first ATP title on Sunday?

Matteo Berrettini leads Filip Krajinovic 2-0 in their head-to-head. Berrettini denied Krajinovic ultimate glory in their first meeting in the Budapest final in 2019, as he came from a set down to defeat the Serb. He would win the pair’s second meeting in Krajinovic’s home country last season at the Belgrade Open. Berrettini possesses potent ground strokes that are tailor made for the slick surface at the Queens Open. Krajinovic, for all of his appalling record grass, has flipped the script and is not to be underestimated. He seems to have found the antidote to cool off the power hitters, having beaten Querreyand Cilic en route to the final. But I feel he will need to play lights out tennis to stand a chance in the final. Cilic, in particular, was passive and erratic in their semifinal. Berrettinishould be too good for the Serbian World No. 48.
