San Diego Open 2021: Andrey Rublev vs Brandon Nakashima Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Andrey Rublev (1) takes on Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, September 29th, 2021.

Will Andrey Rublev move on? Will Brandon Nakashima pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the world’s top players taking on a next-gen promise. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?

Andrey Rublev has been playing pretty solid tennis, despite his disappointing performance at the US Open, he’s seemingly getting his mojo back, serving well, and hitting nice solid groundstrokes off the ground. I expect him to take this win easily, as he’s playing a rather inexperienced youngster as the world’s no. 5 player at the moment. I expect him to serve big, and just take control of the rallies quickly, playing lots of shots crosscourt before seeing an opportunity and taking control of it instantly. I think the game plan will be really simple, and it will be interesting to see how high his level is and if he can meet expectations to grab the title here at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Brandon Nakashima got a great win over Fabio Fognini, toughing it out against him in 3 tight sets. While that win was very impressive, if he’s just barely getting past Fognini, who has not been playing his best tennis, it will be a very hard match against the number five player in the world, who plays a huge game, and can rip a winner from anywhere. He will have to hope Rublev’s serve is down, and attack that wing as much as possible, hoping to set up points and close quickly, as Rublev will likely be too good in many other aspects, let’s see if he can challenge Rublev at all for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Andrey Rublev and Brandon Nakashima have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty interesting matchup, Nakashima plays a solid game, being able to hit hard and flat, or with more spin, hitting a more heavy ball. I think he can take it to Andrey, however, I doubt that he’ll be able to do much during the rallies, Rublev will take control rather quickly and get on top of him, dictating play himself most of the time. Rublev is not the strongest returner, so if Nakashima hits his spots well on the serve, then maybe he can get deep into a set or 2 and turn the tide at some point. However, it certainly seems rather unlikely and I fully expect Rublev to grab this win rather swiftly to kick off his campaign here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
