TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Fabio Fognini (15) meets Filip Krajinovic in the Third Round on Thursday, April 15th 2021.
Will the very experienced and in form Serbian, Filip Krajinovic, be able to knock out the defending champion by dominating the match as he has done in his first two matches here? Will Fabio Fognini continue to shine in these conditions and give it his all as he looks to defend his title here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters? Both players have dominated their first two matches here on the clay, but only one will make it to the Quarter-finals. Who will it?
Filip Krajinovic has not started the 2021 season off as strongly as we are used from him, however here on the clay courts of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, he has put on some very solid performances in both of his matches. In the first round, Krajinovic was cruising 6-1/2-0 against Nikoloz Basilashvili before Basilashvili retired due to injury. In his Second Round match, Krajinovic beat Juan Ignacio Londero in straight sets 6-0/6-3 without hesitation. Krajinovic loves these clay court conditions as he is a great mover around the court and he is able to get himself on top of points early as well with his serve. However, Krajinovic will know that he still has not been tested to his fullest, and he will have to ensure his game is at its best as he meets the defending champion in Fabio Fognini.
Another match here in Monte-Carlo, another victory for Fabio Fognini. Fognini has been in great form here in his title defence, defeating Jordan Thompson in the Second Round in straight sets 6-3/6-3. It is great to see Fabio giving it his best here because we don’t always see this in tournaments, and when he is at his best, the tennis is just something else. Fabio Fognini knows that he will most likely than not fail in defending his title here with an in form Djokovic, Tsitsipas, Rublev, and Nadal all trying to win the title, but he is definitely not letting it get his spirits down as he is playing at a very high level. Fabio has faced some tough opponents in the first two rounds, but he is going to have to ensure he is ready for the toughest battle yet against the Serbian Filip Krajinovic.
Fabio Fognini and Filip Krajinovic have met 3 times before, with Filip Krajinovic leading the head to head 2-1. The last time they met was in the second round of the 2019 Basel Open where Krajinovic won in straight sets 6-2/6-4. Although Krajinovic leads the head to head, and has put on very solid performances against Fabio Fognini, I don’t believe Fognini had been giving it his all in those prior matches as they were all in very small tournaments. However, here, as the defending champion at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, I see Fabio Fognini giving it his absolute best in order to get the win. Krajinovic can always put strong players under pressure, but at the end of the day, I see Fabio coming through.
