TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Laslo Djere takes on Soonwoo Kwon in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, September 24th, 2021.
Will Laslo Djere get an easier win under his belt after a few tough wins here in the first few rounds? Will Soonwoo Kwon continue to cruise through his opponents as he aims to go far and make more of a name for himself? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Astana Open. Who will it be?
Soonwoo Kwon cruised through the tough and experienced Dusan Lajovic in the Round of 16, beating the Serbian in straight sets 7-5/6-4. Soonwoo Kwon is not very well known on the ATP Tour in big tournaments, however, he often pops up in these later rounds of small ATP 250 tournaments. Soonwoo Kwon is a good player on hard courts, being able to move quickly and his with great speed and under pressure. This is good for him as we are playing in indoor hard courts, and he now meets an opponent who tends to prefer clay courts in Laslo Djere here at the 2021 Astana Open.
Laslo Djere had to fight through a very tough Round of 16 match against the always tough and up and coming Lorenzo Musetti, beating the Italian in 3 sets 6-4/6-7/6-4. Laslo will know that he has now played 2 matches which went to a 3rd set here at the 2021 Astana Open and he needs to ensure he does not let go of leads once he gets them as we are now entering the later stages. However, with the fact he is more of a clay courter, he will not have an easy challenge ahead now that he meets Soonwoo Kwon.
Laslo Djere and Soonwoo Kwon have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. I expect a tight match between these two as they have played well this week. However, when comparing who these conditions suit who best, we have to go with Soonwoo Kwon. Kwon likes these fast paced conditions and he has not lost a set this week. Djere is more of a clay courter and has lost a set in every match. I think that it might go down to the wire, but Soonwoo Kwon will get one step closer to the Final here at the 2021 Astana Open.
