TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Ilya Ivashka (8) takes on Emil Ruusuvuori in the quarterfinals on Friday, September 24th, 2021.
Will Ilya Ivashka move on? Will Emil Ruusuvuori cause the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have an exciting matchup of one of the hottest players on the ATP Tour taking on a next-gen star. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Astana Open?
Ilya Ivashka has been playing great tennis, taking the title in Winston-Salem easily, playing really aggressive and hard hitting tennis to swiftly take out his opponents. He has a very versatile game, and he can beat anybody on his day, being able to strike the ball very hard and consistently, easily pulling his opponents off the court and using his very versatile arsenal of weapons to close the point out. He’s absolutely one of the favorites here in the 2021 Astana Open, and if he can easily push Ruusuvuori out of the way, then I really like his chances to go all the way here and grab the title for himself.
Emil Ruusuvuori has a very tough one ahead of him, having been destroyed two times this year by Ivasha, and once on a very similar surfaces, it’s most certainly not a great matchup for him, while he has a slight chance to do it, he will have to play some really solid tennis. The only reason that he has somewhat of a shot here is because he took out the number one seed Aslan Karatsev in straight sets, and showed great mental resolve. Still, Ivashka is just not a good matchup for him, and it will be a very tough contest to have to take out Ivashka and move to the next round here at the 2021 Astana Open.
Ilya Ivashka and Emil Ruusuvuori have met twice before, with Ilya Ivashka leading the head to head 2-0. They’ve met twice, both being this year, with the scoreline being identical both times, and Ivashka crushing him both times, 6-1 6-2. Their last meeting was in Winston-Salem, and Ivashka easily cruised through, while the circumstances may be a little different this time, and Ruusuvuori’s level got a little higher and Ivashka’s a little lower, but the fact is that the head to head gives a huge advantage to Ivashka, and I expect him to knock this one of the park and move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Astana Open.
