TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Jannik Sinner takes on Carlos Alcaraz in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021.
Will Jannik Sinner lock his place at the ATP Finals with a big week at the 2021 Paris Masters? Or will fellow rising star Carlos Alcaraz dent his chances of reaching the season-ending championships in Turin? We take a look at a fascinating second-round match between these two extraordinary talents.
Jannik Sinner sits precariously in eighth position in the ATP Race. In fairness, any aspirant seeking to book a place at the ATP Finals would have loved to be in this position. But defeat in the second round of 2021 Paris Masters will effectively crash his hopes of making it to Turin. There are at least three players waiting on the wings to pounce of any mishap. So Sinner will be acutely aware of just how things will pan out in the event he fails to take charge of proceedings on Wednesday against Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old had a rollercoaster week at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna this past weekend. Sinner entered the world’s top 10 for the first time. But also, he had a tough time to digest his three-set defeat to Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. Can he bounce back in Paris against another young man who needs no introduction?
Carlos Alcaraz is another player who is fast ascending the global ranks of men’s tennis. Now that he is firmly entrenched inside the world’s Top 50, things can only move upwards for this talented 18-year-old. Alcaraz is very much an heir in-waiting to Rafael Nadal in Spanish tennis fraternity. With two Top 10 victories this year, the third could come at the expense of tarnishing Jannik Sinner’s near-perfect year. Alcaraz has warmed up for this second-rounder at the 2021 Paris Masters by defeating Pierre-Hugues Herbert in three sets. A few days after reaching the semifinals in Vienna, the Spaniard was pushed to the limits by the big-serving Frenchman. Ultimately, his power off the ground nullified Herbert’s big weapon to advance.
Epsiode number one of the Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz will be happening on Wednesday at the 2021 Paris Masters. These two, however, have faced off at the ATP Challenger Tour in 2019, with the Spaniard emerging victorious in three grueling sets. And just like the match at the Alicante Challenger two years ago, this promises to be just as good if not better. Sinner and Alcaraz are nearing stratospheric levels of maturity at their ages. They both have an abundance of power and penetrating ground-strokes. You can almost feel for the tennis ball right at this very moment. But that aside, Sinner has a lot to play for this week and I expect him to come out on top in a very close contest.
