TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Lorenzo Musetti takes on Laslo Djere in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021.
Will Laslo Djere move on? Will Lorenzo Musetti beat the higher ranked opponent? This could for sure be an interesting matchup, where we have a close match-up, where neither player is really the clear favorite to take the win. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open?
Lorenzo Musetti got through in 3 sets to set up this meeting with Laslo Djere, and while he should not have needed 3 sets, he still showed good mental fortitude to get through when it was not his best day. Hard courts are not Musetti’s favorite surface, and he will have to adapt to take out someone like Djere, who is a lefty and likes to grind a lot from the baseline, but can definitely make many errors if pressured, Musetti is going to have to keep the first serve percentage high, and target a lot of second serve returns to his backhand, hoping to get on top of the rally early, as Musetti will also want to do some grinding from the back of the court. If I had to choose someone to win, despite his lower ranking and some slight struggles, I would say Musetti is looking in good shape to get through this one and move on to the next Round at the 2021 Astana Open.
Laslo Djere got through in an interesting match, where he won one less point than his opponent but still managed to win in 3 sets. He served 2 aces to 9 double faults, and only managed to convert on 6/17 break point opportunities. If he wants to take out Musetti, he will have to serve much better and play some smarter tennis on any break opportunities he gets. While on paper he might be the favorite to take the match due to head to head and ranking, he did not play the tennis that he wants to be playing if he wants to take out the youngster in Lorenzo Musetti to move on to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Astana Open.
Lorenzo Musetti and Laslo Djere have met twice before, with Laslo Djere leading the head to head 2-0. While Djere did defeat Musetti in two recent matches, and both of them being on Musetti’s favorite surface, I still would say Musetti looks to be in better form, and while he certainly will struggle, I think he’ll be able to take this one in a tight 3 sets. It will mostly be a contest of who makes less unforced errors, and while Musetti should look to be aggressive, and Djere should as well due to the lack of defense Musetti has, I just don’t think they will, I expect many long rallies and lots of break points to come and go, let’s see if these two give us a tight contest as expected to fight for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana open.
