TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Pierre-Hugues Herbert meets Marcos Giron in the Round of 16 on Wednesday August 25th, 2021.
Unseeded American Marcos Giron will face French Qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. Both men have looked solid so far this week and have a fantastic opportunity to get deep into this draw as things have really opened up nicely for them. Giron is higher ranked at the moment but doesn’t quite have the experience that his opponent does, so this has the makings of a very close and entertaining match. Who will get the win here and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in North Carolina?
Pierre-Hugues Herbert is currently ranked #104 in the world and entered the 2021 Winston-Salem Open by coming through the Qualifying Rounds. The Frenchman is highly experienced and has had some issues with injuries and loss of form, which explains his low ranking. Once ranked as high as #36, he came through the Qualies relatively easily and defeated Federico Coria 6-4, 6-2 in the First Round. He is a very solid all-around player, and is equally as comfortable at the baseline or at the net, given his doubles prowess. Herbert is considered the underdog here and is coming off a slight injury but given his vast experience should not be underestimated here by his opponent Marcos Giron.
Marcos Giron is ranked #65 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. The American has quietly been putting together a solid season, and is currently at a career high ranking. Giron has gotten off to a flier here in North Carolina, defeating Facundo Bagnis and upsetting tenth seeded Federico Delbonis both in straight sets. Giron is an extremely solid baseline player who is is impressively quick and covers the court very well. While he has no major weapons, he makes up for that with his all-around game and good anticipation. This is a good matchup for him against Pierre-Hugues Herbert as the Frenchman won’t be able to overpower him, so he has time to work his way into points. He should be considered the slight favorite here due to his superior ranking, but this is shaping up to be a very close match here in the Round of 16.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very close match. I don’t think that the gap in the rankings means too much, as Pierre-Hugues Herbert is a very seasoned competitor and is capable of top-40 tennis. Marcos Giron has been very solid and will be tough to beat here, but I am going with the Frenchman here. His versatility makes him very unique and the American may not be able to get comfortable against him, which could be trouble for him. Giron has really impressed me over the past few seasons with his fighting spirit, but I think he will go down here in three sets. Herbert has a better serve, and that along with his all-around game will be the difference here. The Frenchman will win, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
