TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Jaume Munar takes on Jiri Vesely in the Round of 32 on Monday, September 20th, 2021.
Will Jiri Vesely show us his very strong tennis which have gotten him big wins against good players before as he aims to go far here in Nur-Sultan? Will Jaume Munar show us that he aims to get himself more involved in ATP Tour tournaments for the rest of the year and move away from the Challenger Tour? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Astana Open. Who will it be?
Jiri Vesely has gone 3-3 in his last 6 matches, mainly focusing on the Challenger Tour where he knows he can compete most weeks for the title. Vesely is an underrated player in my opinion, having a great groundstroke game, and a strong enough serve to put his opponents under pressure right from the start of a point. Vesely nearly beat Kevin Anderson this year at the US Open and he will want to find that form again here at the 2021 Astana Open, because if he does, he can definitely go quite far in this draw. However, he meets a tough opponent right from the get-go in Jaume Munar. Can he beat the Spaniard?
Jaume Munar has gone 1-3 in his last 4 matches from the start of the North American hard court swing, not really finding his feet on the surface. Jaume is now 24 and he will be wondering why he has not been able to get himself out of the Challenger Tour for the majority of the year. Jaume is a good player, but the only surface where someone would be afraid of meeting him is clay. Jaume has great movement and top spin, but on hard courts he is not able to hit flat enough and close enough to the lines to get points under his belt through winners. Jaume Munar will know that the rest of the ATP Tour season is basically on indoor hard courts, so he will struggle even more in these conditions, especially against the likes of Jiri Vesely.
Jaume Munar and Jiri Vesely have met 1 time before, with Jiri Vesely leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2018 in indoor hard conditions in Antwerp, where Jiri won in straight sets. If this was a match on clay, Jaume would have the edge without a doubt. However, with the lack of strong winners and the ability to take control of points quickly, Jaume struggles on hard surfaces. Jiri Vesely, on the other hand, has big assets such as his serve and +1 in these conditions. I do expect a tight match because both have been somewhat up and down with form this year, but at the end of the day, Jiri will make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Astana Open in my eyes.
