TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Karolina Pliskova takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Round of 16 on Monday, September 6th, 2021.
We have an extremely entertaining matchup on the cards between two experienced players in the WTA Tour. Will Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova get herself close to a second Grand Slam Final in just 1 year? Will Karolina Pliskova do the same but get closer to going back-to-back in Grand Slams by reaching the Final? These two players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will get themselves into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova cruised in her Round of 32 match against her fellow Russian, Veronica Gracheva, beating her in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Anastasia finally reached the Round of 16 again after 10 years of not having reached this far at the US Open. Anastasia is showing us that she is having a late resurgence in her career, making her maiden Grand Slam Final at the French Open earlier this year, and now getting herself into week 2 of the 2021 US Open. Pavlyuchenkova has a great game and she is an incredibly hard hitting opponent, so she will know she will have her chances against the also in form Karolina Pliskova here.
Karolina Pliskova is continuing to play with the form she had in Wimbledon, where she reached the Final, beating Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets 6-3/6-2. This was a good win because she was good on her serve all throughout the match, which then allowed her to play with freedom on the return game and get the match done sooner rather than later. Karolina is very experienced and she will be looking at this side of the draw seeing that her biggest rival for the title, Ashleigh Barty, has been knocked out of the tournament. Therefore, Karolina will want to give it her all against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to get closer to the Final of the 2021 US Open.
Karolina Pliskova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova have met 8 times, with Karolina Pliskova leading the head to head 6-2. Their last 2 encounters have been won by Anastasia in straight sets. They have always played entertaining matches against each other, and both can win it if they find their best rhythm. However, going off of who has had a tougher draw but come through easily, it has to be Karolina Pliskova. Karolina has been superb on her serve all week and she will use this to get quick games under her belt, which will then allow her to play freely when returning Pavlyuchenkova’s serve. I still expect for a long match, but the Czech will come through this one and get herself into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.
